The North American Manager – Commercial Rail manages Univar Solutions’ relationships with railroad carriers and other rail partners. The Manager will manage rail freight rate procurement services to achieve operational excellence, superior customer service, and maximize cost effectiveness. The Manager will lead discussions about Univar Solutions’ rail freight costs, contracts, and vendor relationships in accordance with company standards.


• Manage Univar Solutions’ rail procurement program.
• Identify best practices, define internal and external engagement activities, and build and manage relationships with railroad companies.
• Manage rail freight procurement activities, including sourcing, pricing, negotiation and contracting.
• Manage rail freight contract terms and renewals and provide rate estimates and contracts to meet the business’s requirements for growth and transition.
• Work directly with Product Management and Sales to evaluate new business opportunities requiring rail assets, freight rates, etc. to support commercial growth.
• Manage the BCD monthly rail fleet planning program.
• Work directly with IBE and BCD Product Management to align on fleet requirements.
• Work with Operations leadership and local teams to manage the rail service program, monitoring rail carrier service performance and acting as the single point of contact with rail carrier leadership to improve service and minimize cost to serve.
• Negotiate/mitigate railroad demurrage directly with rail carriers to minimize cost-to-serve. Work directly with rail carriers to solve any rail network issues—embargoes, switching schedules, congestion, and transit problems.
• Supervise the Rail Fleet Administrator role. Participate in day-to-day railcar interactions with Product Managers, Commercial leaders, railroads procurement teams, and Railroad administrators.
• Represent Univar’s interest within industry groups /association, i.e., American Assn of Rail Shippers. Support the Rail Logistics team as needed for occasional tactical support and execution (OTMAs, diversions, etc.)
• Assist in other rail-related planning and maintenance activities as necessary.
• Financial Responsibility: $40M rail freight, demurrage, storage, etc.

• 5+ years’ experience, preferably working directly with Class 1 railroads
• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience
• Proficient using PC based packages such as Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook; SAP experience a plus Specialized Knowledge/Skills:
• In-depth knowledge of the North American rail industry. Existing relationships with Class 1 RRs highly preferred.
• Familiarity with hazardous materials transportation by rail, including hazmat billing requirements.
• Working knowledge of governmental regulations and requirements related to the rail industry, i.e. DOT, FRA, AAR etc…
• Strong working knowledge of the railcar repair network, rules, practices, and procedures, including OTMA, DDCT, UMLER and AAR Field Manual.
• Ability to recommend strategies and to translate strategies into tactics.
• Prefer knowledge of rail management software systems (RSI, Bourque), and familiarity with company accounting policies
