Primary Purpose:

The Claims Manager is responsible for management of three key areas of claims: workers’ compensation; automobile; and commercial claims.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Claims Management:
    • Partner with Third Party Administrator (TPA) and local management to ensure injured employee receives prompt and appropriate medical treatment, and timely communication of leave status. Also ensure appropriate return to work strategies are implemented.
    • Manage workers compensation, and auto liability claims to evaluate treatment plan, resolution plans, adequacy of reserves, closure strategies with claim adjusters, attorneys and local management.
    • Manage return-to-work options, nurse triage program, medical management, physical demand evaluation, functional capacity evaluations, surveillance and outside medical assistance, etc.
    • Assist with property and other insurance claims reporting, investigation and disposition.
    • Collaborate with defense counsel to develop appropriate defense strategies and execution.
    • Aid in discovery and compile information for court cases as needed.
    • Attend claims mediations, as warranted.
    • Coordinate and lead quarterly claims reviews.
    • Present claims management educational programs as appropriate.
    • Manage commercial claims by partnering with the line of business contact to gather the appropriate initial information.
    • Complete an analysis of the risk/loss and paths to resolution of commercial claims.
    • Monitor and foster the investigation of commercial claims in concert with the effected line(s) of business and location(s).
    • Manage the day-to-day handling of the claim, and actively move the matter to resolution.
  • Risk Mitigation:
    • Independently analyze the risk presented in each claim and formulate a proposal for claims handling and risk mitigation, providing thought leadership and strategic partnership
    • Analyze commercial claim trends, develop proposals for recommended interventions and be able to report on same in an effective manner.
    • Collaborate with Environment, Health & Safety (EHS) to identify injury trends and make recommendations to prevent and mitigate losses.
    • Identify loss drivers and claims trends to reduce claim frequency and severity. Develop communication pieces including formal training once driver and trends are identified.
  • Program Processes and Procedures:
    • Audit TPAs for effectiveness and cost containment.
    • Evaluate competence of TPA adjusters and recommend team changes when appropriate.
    • Develop and implement claims reporting and handling procedures.
    • Complete any and all required State reporting requirements regarding Workers’ Compensation.
    • Manage vendor relationships.
    • Manage in accordance with the commercial claims policy and designations of responsibilities. Performs other related duties as required
  • Financial Responsibility:
    • Workers’ Comp and Auto Liability claims rarely meet our insurance deductibles or retentions and are mostly considered “company-funded” expenses. This position has a high degree of focus on cost containment and cost reduction by working quickly to reduce the time between opening and closing a claim.
  • Supervisory Responsibility:
    • Overseeing the work of our third-party administrator.

 

Education/Experience:

  • 5-10 years of experience required, with a preference for 3 or more years substantial claims, or equivalent business experience.
  • The right candidate will have a good understanding of the life of a claim from the first notice of loss, investigation, loss valuation, reserving, and ultimate resolution.
  • Detailed knowledge of TPA operations, including claims handling, disability, litigation management, and subrogation.
  • Prior experience in Safety within Transportation, Manufacturing, and/or Distribution preferred.
  • Bachelor's degree in related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Certified Workers’ Compensation Professional certificate preferred
